Sophomore Year
2019-2020
As I begin year 2, I am excited and hopeful for the opportunities to come. Some goals that I have set for myself include

Preparing for dental school applications.
-
Being more involved in extracurriculars, especially with leadership positions.
-
Continue to work hard in school!
With this being said, take a look at what sophomore year has to offer down below!

Being voted as SGA Senator for the Reaud Honors College, I am excited to see what direction my role will take me to facilitate change at Lamar. The purpose of the Leadership Training is to gather all of the senators to share project ideas with one another. In addition, we also learned more about Robert's Rules for procedural motions and Lamar's history. I am excited to work under the executive cabinet consisting of President Edward Doan, Vice President Jack Dolce, and Secretary Haya Alani.

Unlike last year where I was assigned a Mentor, this year I volunteered to serve as a Peer Mentor for a freshman named Deidre who entering the Honors Program at Lamar! Similar to myself, Deidre is also a Biology major but is doing a pre-med track instead. I am excited to work and guide her in the following years as she starts her journey at Lamar. She is an extremely sweet individual, and I hope to hang out with her again soon!

Every year, award recipients of the Mirabeau and Southeast Texas Legends Scholarship gather together for dinner and discussion. This year, I sat at a table with the Dean of Students, Dr. Terry Mena, and two Mirabeau recipients named Luis Arevalo and Isaac Moreno. It was really interesting to understand each other's backgrounds and what influenced each of us to attend Lamar. I look forward to seeing these two Cardinals around the Honors College in the future!

This year, I was invited to attend the Mr. Wayne A. Reaud Recognition Dinner located at the reception space within the Honors College. Mr. Reaud helped fund the creation of the Honors College at Lamar. At this dinner, I was able to make conversation with Mr. Reaud, along with other honor students, and discussed how the Honors College has greatly impacted our university experience here at LU.

SGA Coffee with Congress
October 21, 2019
As an initiative to get more students more involved in SGA, Senator Timesha thought of a great idea to host Coffee with Congress. In this event, we were to able to reach out to students who may be unfamiliar with SGA and its purpose. At this event, we handed out coffee, hot chocolate, tea, and pastries! We had a great turnout, and it was a "sweet" way to start off my birthday! We hope to plan another similar event next semester.

As SGA Senator, one of the projects I had come up with is the creation of a Suggestion Box. I realized that not all students are able to attend our Joint Session meetings due to class, work, or extracurricular activities. I wanted the Suggestion Box to stand out, and have slips that students can use to fill out any suggestions or concerns about campus. Sophomore Class Senator David Williams assisted me in painting the suggestion box for this project.

Sam Houston Elementary School Dental Hygiene Day
October 23, 2019
As a member of Lamar's Predental Society, we place a big emphasis on community outreach, especially to younger generations in order to teach them about oral hygiene.
This month, we traveled to Sam Houston Elementary School to teach the importance of oral hygiene through fun and engaging activities with 2nd and 4th graders. My role at this event was to schedule it and reach out to community leaders to donate toothbrushes and toothpaste for all students.

Every year, SGA hosts a Safety Walk with various administrators across campus. The purpose of the Safety Walk is to identify any potential safety hazards across campus. This year, Senator Tyler Martin helped coordinate the event and mapped the route we were going to take to go through the entire campus. During the safety walk, I was able to address concerns about lighting in the parking lots and uneven pavements for students with disabilities.

Model United Nations- Washington D.C Edition
November 7, 2019
This year, I decided to challenge myself further by signing up for the National Model United Nations Competition in Washington D.C. Under the guidance of Dr. Dodson, our team as a whole was able to place Honorable Mention at the competition! I was particularly impressed considering it was all of our first time competing at that level. For this conference, I represented the country Algeria and discussed Women's rights. My partner for the competition was Himani and I can't wait to work with her again at the state conference in Houston, TX!
President Suite- September 7, 2019
With my first year being an LU Ambassador, I signed up to volunteer the President Suite for the Mississippi Delta Valley vs. Lamar football game. It was such a fun and rewarding experience as I was able to network with donors and administrators from Lamar. In addition, Lamar won the game!

Midstream Symposium- November 21, 2019
At the Midstream Symposium, Lamar was celebrating the creation of the first Center for Midstream Management located on campus in the nation. This was a fun and engaging event as I was able to have a great conversation with a fellow Lamar Alumni who graduated with a bachelor's in Biology in 1960!

Fletcher Elementary Dental Hygiene Day
November 18, 2019
For the month of November, I assisted in organizing another Dental Hygiene Day located at Fletcher Elementary. This time, we were able to create a new activity for students to play with, and provide toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste for students to take home!

Fun fact: I attended Fletcher from Kindergarten to 3rd grade!!

Some ambassador events require us to be aware of proper etiquette behavior and techniques. Today, I was able to learn about proper techniques for handshakes, dining, and waltzes. It was really interesting to learn this as I have never been taught or informed about proper etiquette before.

SGA Swipe Out Hunger
December 2, 2019
Across America, food disparity remains to be a huge issue for people every day. To combat this, SGA worked together with Lamar's Dining Hall to create a program called Swipe Out Hunger. In Swipe Out Hunger, students who have a meal plan are able to donate their extra swipes to students in need. I was really excited to work this project as I know personally I have extra swipes tat could be of some use.

For this event, I was able to recruit students to the Swipe Out Hunger Event and encourage them to reach out to their fellow classmates to do the same. At the end of the day, we reached our max and was able to have 500 meals donated to students facing food disparity!

With finals quickly approaching, I decided to participate in the Setzer Study Center! During this event, I was able to collect final essentials such as snacks, pencils, and scantrons. In addition, I was able to interact with therapy dogs and overall just destress before my finals in the following days.
